How to protect your energy while polishing your manuscript
Editing is an important step in the writing process and can be very empowering, but it can also be exhausting and deflating. Homing in on every word and every sentence, and wondering if your book is even good enough can quickly drain your creativity and confidence.
Here are five ways to edit your book without burning out:
1. Set Smaller, Sustainable Goals
Consistency is key here. Instead of trying to edit your entire novel in one marathon weekend, (in which you will probably miss a lot of errors or create new ones) break it down. Find a simpler way that works for you. Try one chapter a day, or set a timer for 30 minutes at a time. Small, consistent effort is more effective—and kinder to your brain.
2. Create a Style Sheet and Checklist
Don’t make yourself guess what to look for. Checklists (one for grammar, dialogue, pacing, etc.) keep you focused and makes the process feel manageable. Get into the habit of creating yourself a style sheet to keep all the minute details straight and easy to look up when you need to. These are both helpful while writing and during the editing process.
3. Take Mental Breaks (Without Guilt)
You are not a machine. Walk away when your focus fades. A walk, a snack, or even a full day off can help you come back with fresher eyes and better ideas.
4. Silence the Inner Critic
It’s easy to spiral into self-doubt during edits. Editing isn’t a sign you failed—it’s how your story gets stronger. Progress is not perfection. Remember: nobody writes perfectly the first time, and every famous author has a professional editor or a team of editors.
5. Know When to Call in Help
If your self-edits start to feel overwhelming, it may be time to bring in a professional editor. This isn’t a sign that you’re not doing well. You just need a little assistance. We’re here to help you carry the load—not to judge your work.
Your well-being matters as much as your word count.
Honor your mental health, give yourself some grace while editing, and know that your story—and your energy—deserve care.
